Opportunity Information: Apply for W81XWH 19 GWIRP RAA

The FY19 Department of Defense (DoD) Gulf War Illness Research Advancement Award aims to support applied research focused on Gulf War Illness (GWI). This opportunity seeks to enhance and validate potential markers and treatments for GWI, especially during the Qualification phase of research.

Applicants are required to present preliminary data and articulate a clear, testable hypothesis with translational potential based on existing evidence in the GWI field. It's essential for proposals to emphasize how the findings could ultimately benefit veterans affected by GWI, even if immediate clinical impacts are not expected.

Supported activities may include expanding limited data on potential markers, validating therapeutic interventions, advancing research on druggable targets, and collecting preclinical data for repurposing approved drugs or submitting new Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to the FDA. Proposals testing FDA-approved drugs in animal models must justify the necessity of preclinical testing before moving to human trials.

Additionally, applicants are encouraged to contribute Gulf War Veteran biospecimens and data to the established Boston Biorepository, Recruitment, and Integrative Network (BBRAIN) for GWI research. Those opting for the Biorepository Contribution may qualify for increased funding, contingent on submitting a detailed Biorepository Contribution Statement outlining costs and adherence to established protocols for quality assurance.

The total direct costs for the research cannot exceed $700,000, while applications incorporating the Biorepository Contribution Option may reach up to $720,000. The proposed research should be relevant to active duty service members, veterans, military beneficiaries, and the general public.
